Lip Schtick

Kind of what I see in my magnifying mirror, too!
Photo: Ellen Von Unworth, Vogue Italia, September 2004 ed.

I like a crimson lip but can't stand a clownish pout.

Navigating red lipstick isn't easy--too orangey here, too waxy there--I go through hopeful phases of slicking on various Marilyn Monroe-esque hues, but always come back to a boring dependable pink-y beige. Nothing's worse than candy-apple red gloss on an over 30 face (under 30 could wear Crayolas on their skin and still look edgy and lovely, but that is the charming gift of the very young).

As summer's fading tan lines make way for back-to-school sweaters, I've once again been on the search for a little polish for my pucker.

By gorge(ous), I think I've got it!

Laura Mercier lip stain in Scarlet

This ravishing pot o' lip stain does double duty: Dot it on with a fingertip for a natural bitten-lip look, or use a brush to layer color for a deeper, more daring matte red. Swipe on this non-greasy formula after adding a layer of mascara and a smidge of golden shadow, and forget all about how pretty you are...

Public touch-ups need not apply.

If Angie says go red, you go red.

    1. Let me know what you discover! This is a blue-red and you can make it more subtle by adding a little beige-y gloss on top and blotting. I think the rest of the face has to go more natural to avoid trying too hard..xx

  2. Oh, I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to do crimson. I am waaaaayyyy over 30. I do have a darker stain I got in my Birtchbox. Perhaps I will play with it now that we are entering fall.

    1. Why the heck not? Reddish lips are an easy way to switch it up, 'cause you can just wipe it off if you don't like it! (Better than dying your hair at home in a crazy brown from the box, trust me, a bad idea!)

  3. Love the look of red lipstick. I definitely cannot pull it off, but I might give this one a try!

    1. Let me know if it works! I like this because it doesn't rub off on my teeth (only a cool look if you're Lucille Ball).

  4. Ooo another lip stain to check out! I've tried playing in the store with Benefit's lip stain, but it's so watery, not at all what I expected. I'll have to see what this one is like :)

    1. Yes, the one from Benefit looks very natural and you have to be aware of drippage--I think they want you to use the Benefit pot of reddish gloss on top to amplify it. Let me know if you try the Laura Mercier, or if you discover something better!

    1. Well, Kristiina--I usually like to crop my head out of the picture--too distracting ;) BUT you can see me modeling my very cute Gap peacoat in "5 Fashion Essentials for Mom" (no head there, either)...
