Lightening and Thunder have decided to share a room, and despite the ensuing hijinks during their first week bunking together (poking the screen out of their "child-safe" second-floor window, flipping over Lightening's former changing table, and one-who-shall-remain-nameless shoving a band-aid up his nose*) it's been going swimmingly.
I couldn't be happier.
The Mr. and I are both only children (truly, it is a miracle that we have learned to share so well, although he still complains that I sleep in an "L" shape--wha?) so we had no idea weather this was a wise decision or not. I firmly believe our pediatrician is a mensa-level genius, so I promptly sought her guidance. "Go for it," she said, "They will look back as teenagers and remember the times they were able to bond as brothers."
{sob} What mommy would take that special opportunity from her children??
Especially if the net result is that I get an office.
I am so very, very happy in my new quiet room (formerly the playroom). No one colors marker art on my bills, dribbles juice boxes on my computer keyboard, or even realizes I am home whilst the babysitter stands on duty.
I have decorated the room in soothing shades of bisque, cream and chocolate with touches of sky blue scattered about. There are matching 3 ring binders labeled for each child's school's PTA and my various community responsibilities as well as for my own creative endeavors. I've even salvaged my youngest's old nursery rocking chair and added a cozy throw and reading light for some "me" time with Star magazine. Only the best for Speed Chic, my dears!
Now Thunder has a "protector" from any bad dreams, Lightening shifted his 4:45 AM wake up call to 6:15 and Mommy has a place to rest her frazzled mind.
And we all know, ain't nobody happy if Momma ain't happy.
Here's to

| Remote control? What remote control?? |
Women have sat indoors all these millions of years, so that by this time the very walls are permeated by their creative force, which has, indeed, so overcharged the capacity of bricks and mortar that it must needs harness itself to pens and brushes and business and politics.
Intellectual freedom depends on material things. Poetry depends upon intellectual freedom, and women have always been poor, not for two hundred years, but from the beginning of time ... That is why I have laid so much stress on money and a room of one’s own.

* Should you have a curious child who likes to shove things up his nose, learn as my 5 year old did from "Despicable Me": Gently but firmly place one finger up the non-blocked nostril to seal it, and blow out heartily through the other side. Continue to snort outwards until the offending item is dislodged. I am obviously not a genius pediatrician here, so by all means go to the doctor if there is any problem. However, Universal Pictures did save me a(nother) trip to the ER.

Amen! I dream of a room of my own. A space for my own creativity and thoughts. Someday I'll have one, and I plan on framing a Virginia Woolf quote and hanging it on my own wall. She GOT it. Happy SiTS Day, and can I just say that nicknaming your boys Thunder and Lightening is just genius? Seriously, so cool.
ReplyDeleteThank you, I hope you get your room soon! It really does help. Thank you for reading Speed Chic!
DeleteO.M.G.G! And three cheers for Virginia Woolf!
ReplyDeleteI want pics of your You-Room! The colours sound fantabulous!
Yes, yes they do...now if I could just find a minute to locate my paintbrush...
DeleteThank you for reading Speed Chic!
What a great idea! Love that you now have a space of your own.
ReplyDeleteAnd my mental well-being loves it too! Thank you for reading Speed Chic!
Deletehappy SITS day
ReplyDeletelightening and thunder, I love it...we have a Dinosaur
i wish I had space for my own room, but in a small apt there is no space, at least I have my laptop.
My son will be an only, so it's funny that you and your hubby are onlies and found each other.
Yes, don't worry about your "only", they turn out great ;)
DeleteThank you for reading Speed Chic!
oh, going to follow your blog now.
ReplyDeleteI shared a room with my sister growing up and it made all the difference... Happy SITS Day Mama!
ReplyDeleteIt is so fun watching them become friends (most of the time!) Thank you for reading Speed Chic!
DeleteMom definitely needs/deserves a room of her own. I don't know what I'd do without my own office.
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS Day!
Totally. Sometimes even the laundry room feels like a safe haven. Thank you for reading Speed Chic!
DeleteIt sounds heavenly! I am currently in my "office" listening to Barney's Christmas in the background and surrounded by toys! Happy SITS day! :)
ReplyDeleteThank goodness the Barney phase has passed..Now I know all the words to Go Diego Go! but it's kinda catchy. Thank you for reading Speed Chic!
DeleteWe also love the "office" concept around here. I actually don't *use* it all that much, but just having a place to put everything other than the corner of the dining room is nice. And the kids love sharing a room, too. They are the best of friends (usually).
ReplyDeleteOur dining room is currently housing a shoe rack of crocs, backpacks with assorted soccer gear and a sparring duffle bag. Progress, not perfection as they say! Thank you for reading Speed Chic!
DeleteEnjoy your new office! My jewelry "studio" is a corner of my bedroom, which can be challenging at times (i.e. when my hubbie decides to sleep till 11:00 am on the weekend and I want to work--can you tell we don't have children yet?). I understand how valuable having a space to call your own can be. Happy SITS day!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your creative time! How fun. Thank you for reading Speed Chic (maybe get the hubster some eyeshades and earplugs for Christmas ;) xo
DeleteEnjoy! The room of my own is the kitchen table - before everyone wakes up. Works for me, but oh - the joy of a room with matching, pretty binders. Live it up! So glad I found your blog via SITS. I will enjoy reading more!
ReplyDeleteI too love getting up before the rascals take over the house--which would be what is happening right...now. Thank you for reading Speed Chic!
DeleteHappy SITS Day. Enjoy your place in space. I'm sure your little guys won't need it back.
ReplyDeleteThey seem to like all their toys in one big pile anyway, so all is well! Thank you for reading Speed Chic!
DeleteCongrats on your new space. It sounds like you need a room to escape too. I love having boys and the closeness they share, but there is a certain dynamic that you need to get away from. Every now and again :) Happy SITS Day!
ReplyDeleteMy three all share one room, mainly because we have a tiny house. But on the mornings when I wake up and hear them talking and giggling with each other, it makes me smile. :)
ReplyDeleteI have three kids in one room and it's NUTS!! LOL.
ReplyDeleteI think all mothers should have an escape pod programmed to fly at a pre-determined place at any moment. Mine would be Tahiti . . .
I loved sharing a room with my sister as a young child. Even when we were older and had to visit my mother's house we decided to share a room. It made life a little more tolerable during those turbulent years. Happy SITS day!
ReplyDelete{Melinda} Oooooo.. I am so jealous! Would love to have a room of my own. My "office" is my dining room which gives me space, but no doors to close! Good for you!
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS Day!
Hmmm...maybe some sheer hanging drapes/folding screen/ear plugs/boom box with soothing sounds of a waterfall?? I love a big dining room table, though. Thank you so much for reading Speed Chic!
DeleteI too was an only child and I had three children. Yes, as an only child, we need our space! Reading your post, brings back memories of when my children were small.
ReplyDeleteThree! Isn't it sweet to remember the good stuff... Thank you for reading Speed Chic!
DeleteI recently got an office of my own. It. Is. Heaven. Of course, when I have to leave the door open, The Wild Kratts still blare in. Oh well. It can't all be perfect. Happy SITS day!
ReplyDeleteSounds awesome. At least there is a door to close! Enjoy and thanks for reading Speed Chic!
DeleteYour boys, cute names for them btw, will have memories to last them a life time. It was a nice trade off to give them something that they wanted and you got your own personal space, I think that is important and I'm happy to know that it is indeed possible.
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS day :)
Thank you very much! Yes, it all worked out...
DeleteI too finally have a room of my own!! It's glorious and I've been dreaming about how I will do it up. Of course, it's been several months now since my boys have moved into together and I still haven't gotten my office together yet. I finally have a desk and a desk chair so at least I'm moving in that direction :-) Happy SITS Day!
ReplyDeleteThat's great! It is so much fun to get to escape for a few minutes--thanks for reading Speed Chic!
DeleteLucky mama!
ReplyDeleteNow, please update us in six months when they're fighting like crazy and you have to give up your office to keep the peace...hehehe ;)
How about just last night when the three year old decided to practice his handstands in his bed, while big bro held his legs when they were supposed to be asleep! Thank goodness we didn't have to go to the ER, but let's just say we learned another definition of "Bad Idea".
DeleteGreat post! Oh so funny! Just visting from Sits!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by!
DeleteAre your boys still enjoying their room together? Oh and where were you some 9 years ago when my daughter had a bead stuck up her nose? Trip to the ER taught me that trick ;). Happy belated SITS day.
ReplyDeleteSo far, so good! And here's to not shoving things up our noses anymore! (I didn't write about the unfortunate fate of the coffee bean at the coffee shop, but you know where that one's headed...)
DeleteThe quote from 'Virginia Wolfe' is wonderful. I shared a room with my sis and my 2 shared rooms also. I think it's sometimes "just not to be missed". I think my fav is the quiet whispering after lights out. :)
ReplyDeleteTotally. A great way to hear some hilarious stuff, as a mother hiding in the hallway! Also, my husband and I are both only children, so it's interesting for us to see our boys become friends, outside of us. Thanks for reading Speed Chic!
