5 Fall Fashion Essentials for Mom!

Google "Cute Mom Clothes" and you'll get an ad for Disney and a pic of some creepy T-shirt that says "Master of the Microwave".

I don't know about you, dear reader, but without an adorable ensemble to rock, Speed Chic feels life is a little, well, pointless is a strong word--shall we just say less fun.

Thank goodness I am a former professional shopper (since the age of, oh, about six) and I am thrilled to bring you the bounty of my fall fashion findings.

One note--Here is how I roll when it comes to daily tasks--Let's take yesterday's "walk" to the school bus as an example:

As you can see, Lightening and Thunder are literally running to the bus stop. Tory Burch flats are not going to cut it for me here, as I have to be able to keep up with the little track stars to prevent them from bouncing off somebody's car (A heartfelt plea to people who drive here: Stop at the stop sign! Even though I do eventually catch up and hold hands with a vise-like grip, you never know who is whipping around the corner on some sort of superhero mission...) Ahem, back to
your regularly scheduled wardrobe update...

Back to School Special: 5 Fall Essentials for Mom!

Gap
1. Tailored Soft Coat
Warm as a sweatshirt, polished as a peacoat!
Wear it with jeans and a white T-shirt as a cozy alternative to that old tracksuit jacket.

Dansko
2. Slouchy suede booties
These pull-on soft-as-butter clog-based boots are uber-comfy with a stacked heel and rounded toe. Wear over skinny jeans or with Wolford opaque black tights and...

JCrew (this tweedy skirt is shot through with a silver thread)
3. Embellished mini skirt
Add a solid color crew neck sweater in light weight merino wool (I like a blue one with this skirt, but you could also do a black or camel turtleneck) and some tights + boots = ready to rock the Parents' Night.

Lucky Jeans
4. Denim
Grab some dark denim with a touch of stretch like these Sienna Cigarette Jeans from Lucky. They are slim without being skintight, and the slightly cropped length tucks easily into rainboots or works rolled up as an in-between-seasons moment with ballet flats.

Gap

5. Black T-shirts
I'll take my fashion cues from the lovely Michael Kors, who advised in a recent magazine article that one should start out each season with a fresh stack of little black t-shirts. Pair this top with the mini or the jeans and have a no fuss, pulled together look instantly. Add a patterned scarf or a gold necklace for glitz, and get in that carpool lane!

  5. my whole wardrobe centers around brown, I just love the color and makes it easier to find clothes and get dressed. but I love the concept, I agree that we moms need certain basics in our wardrobe to feel pretty but able to chase after kids.

    1. So true, and chocolate brown is beautiful with a little cream, plum, bright pink...one of those great base colors. I usually choose either brown, black or grey going in to fall to use as my wardrobe building block. Thank you for reading Speed Chic!

  6. What great tips for this fashion-challenged mommma. Thanks for the idea. I especially love the soft coat but wonder if I would ever be brave enough for the mini skirt!

    1. Thank you, and I love it when things don't cost the same as one's monthly rent :) That coat is at the Gap and I am pretty sure it's now on sale...Thank you for reading Speed Chic!

  8. I love that skirt! I am looking for more plaid and tweed this Fall. And I love fancy tights, too. I wish I could find pretty shoes, but my feet are too small for shopping in stores and I am leery of buying online lest they don't fit. You have a cute blog. I'm off to poke around some more! :)

    1. I just went to Marshall's shoe emporium (do you have one near you? all discounted designer shoes!) and a majority of the sizes are for the petite foot (wildly unlike mine, oh well!) Thank you for reading Speed Chic!

  11. I'm dressed everyday too- no exceptions!
I drive my daughter to school and walk her into the gym where we wait for her teacher to pick up.

I think it's an important representation of yourself and your family to be put together in the morning.

The moms in PJ's have to cut it out!
This was a huge debate on the talk a few seasons ago...Sharon was in a rage over it saying how she thought it was okay to drop off in pjs. I never even brought my younger son in pj's!

Nice to see others feel the same as me....work it girl! lol

  16. I'm just cracking up over here about how you put this post together. Brilliant! And the picture is hilarious! I have two boys and they RUN everywhere! I want to keep up with them (so I've started working out) and I want to look cute. Obviously a concern is trying to wear shoes that are cute (I'm no fashionista) and being able to keep up with them. I can totally relate. Thanks for this and happy SITS day!!

    1. Thank you so much--I try to mix it up a little! Boys need to run--I call them my personal trainers. I have never exercised more in my life. Exhausted, but man--the jeans are looking good :) I am glad you relate--I'll keep looking for functional but cute shoes--it's kind of my mission in life. Thanks for reading Speed Chic!

  19. I'm going to pass on that little Dansko information to all my friends who think those clogs are the bees knees--finally--they've redeemed themselves a bit and created something not hideous! And the black t-shirt idea is genius. I say a black t-shirt with fabulous accessories is always amazing! Happy SITS Day to you!

    1. I agree. The clog debate is a matter of the comfort level your feet require. If you can run in Louboutins, I say, more power to ya! These are solid little shoes, but I won't break an ankle getting to the bus stop:) Thank you for reading Speed Chic!

  23. I'm so proud of myself that I own something on your list (the same Lucky jeans). I love the IDEA of black, but whenever I wear it, it never fails - I wind up with snot, peanut butter, drool, or some other kid mess on me!

    Happy SITS Day!

    1. Cute! (the jeans, not the liquids) I hear ya, in that case, might I suggest layers? When the top one is dirty, you can whip it off and use it as a rag! (who says today's fashion isn't multi-functional??) Thank you for reading Speed Chic!

  25. I told myself at the beginning of the school year that I was going to wear a dress every day to bring my daughter to school. That lasted about 3 weeks but with the change of the weather the skinny jeans and black boots made their way back out. I always make an attempt to be stylish when I leave the house— I would never go out in sweatpants! I thought that pea-coat sweater looked cute and cozy. I'm visiting from SITS, I think I missed your big day yesterday because I had a migraine :-( I hope it was fabulous.
